INTEGRATING TELEMEDICINE INTO GENERAL SURGICAL PRACTICE: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS

Abstract
The aim of the study was to explore the integration of telemedicine in surgical practices, focussing on an integrative literature review to gather and update relevant information on the subject. A qualitative Integrative Literature Review, following the formulation of the question using the PICO structure, definition of inclusion and exclusion criteria, carried out in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases, the CAPES journal portal and the PubMed database via MEDLINE, identification and categorisation of the information from the selected studies, critical analysis, and synthesis of the knowledge acquired, using controlled descriptors validated by DeCS/MeSH, such as "General Surgery" and "Telemedicine", combined by the Boolean operator "AND". The process resulted in the identification of 235 documents, 11 of which were selected as the final sample. The growing importance of telemedicine and technological innovations in healthcare is evident, particularly in surgery, highlighting how the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the transition to virtual consultations, without compromising the quality of medical decision-making. Racial/socioeconomic disparities in access to telemedicine are highlighted, suggesting that technology can paradoxically improve access to surgical care for historically marginalised groups. The results point to the future of surgery, emphasising the vital role of robotic technologies and artificial intelligence in surgical education and clinical practice. Future research should focus on exploring strategies for effective implementation of telemedicine in rural and resource-limited areas, as well as investigating the long-term impact on quality of care and patient satisfaction.
