THEATER AND SOCIAL MOVEMENT IN THE AMAZON OF ACRE (1970-1980)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This essay explores the intersection between theatrical art and social movements in the Acrean Amazon during the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in the city of Rio Branco. Its aim is to investigate how theater groups acted as social and political agents, contributing to the development of citizenship and to urban, social, and labor transformation during a period marked by military dictatorship and the struggle of rubber tappers and Indigenous peoples for land rights. The research adopts a qualitative methodology, using documentary research as its primary data source and bibliographic references as secondary sources. The corpus includes artistic accounts, theater reviews, promotional materials from theater groups, news reports, and documents related to social movements that engage with theatrical practices. For data analysis, a historiographic approach was employed, based on the interpretation of documents to construct historical narratives. The findings reveal that theater served as a bridge between different sectors of society, fostering dialogue and political engagement, and establishing itself as a vital tool in the defense of rights and the coordination of Acrean social struggles. The analysis concludes that the lived experiences and productions of theater groups such as Grupo Testa and Grupo De Olho Na Coisa demonstrate that theatrical art, beyond entertainment, has the power to spark discussion and mobilize communities around urgent social issues. In times of oppression and adversity, theater emerges as a powerful instrument of social engagement, encouraging critical reflection and the potential reconfiguration of social, political, and cultural relations in the Acre region and beyond.
