Abstract

The frequency and magnitude of environmental disasters have intensified year by year. Economic and population growth accelerates environmental degradation and poses significant urban challenges, requiring new approaches to the sustainable planning of cities. This study seeks to examine the perceptions of students enrolled in Architecture and Urban Planning and Civil Engineering programs concerning Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), with the aim of assessing their knowledge, opinions, and perspectives as future professionals on incorporating such solutions into urban planning and sustainable infrastructure development. This study seeks to answer the following question: What is the perception of students in these fields regarding NBS as an alternative to mitigate the impacts of human development in urban areas? The methodological framework of this study is based on an exploratory and descriptive qualitative-quantitative approach grounded in the theoretical-deductive method. Primary data collection was performed through a structured questionnaire applied at two higher education institutions in Rio Grande do Sul, resulting in 59 valid responses. The questionnaire included both closed and open-ended questions aimed at identifying the level of knowledge, opinions, and perspectives regarding the integration of NBS into urban and infrastructure projects. The analysis of primary data was conducted using descriptive statistics and content analysis, while secondary data were analyzed through a literature review followed by validation or refutation of the statements. The results indicate that, although students recognize the importance of NBS for urban resilience and mitigation of environmental impacts, there are still gaps in knowledge regarding the topic and its practical application. Challenges were identified, such as the lack of specific academic training, economic barriers, and difficulties in implementing public policies focused on green and blue infrastructure. The study highlights the need to more effectively integrate NBS into academic curricula and urban policies, promoting a multidisciplinary approach that broadens the understanding of the issues and encourages the adoption of these solutions in urban planning and development. For substantial changes to occur in how cities address environmental challenges, it is essential that Nature-Based Solutions are taught effectively and practically within the education of professionals, especially in the fields of Architecture and Urbanism and Civil Engineering.
