Abstract

Institutional theory offers an important and distinctive extension to the repertoire of perspectives and approaches to explain organizational structure. Thus, this theoretical essay aims to reflect on the extent to which the innovations brought about by the institutional, neo-institutional approach, as well as institutional change and organizational institutionalism, can be useful, both for analysis and for action in modern organizations. To this end, this study has a qualitative and exploratory approach, it is a theoretical essay that is characterized by its reflexive and interpretative nature, carried out from a literature review. As a result, it was evidenced that the notion of institutional entrepreneurship emerged as a new avenue of research on endogenous explanations of institutional change. For the purpose of connecting, uniting, and extending work on institutional entrepreneurship, institutional change and innovation, and deinstitutionalization, the study of institutional work is concerned with the practical actions through which institutions are created, maintained, and unmade. Organizational institutionalism has the potential to help provide a deeper and more accurate understanding of how institutions shape and are shaped by the interaction between individuals, groups, organizations, fields, and society. Finally, the recognition of the value of longitudinal studies of organizations, organizational populations, and organizational fields is well received as another indicator of the maturation of institutional knowledge.
