SPECIALIZATION STANDARD OF URUGUAY EXPORTS

Abstract
This research aims to analyze the pattern of specialization of Uruguay's exports in the period 2005 to 2018. Specifically, it intends to analyze the pattern of specialization of Uruguayan exports, the composition of the export basket and the main trading partners. To this end, three competitiveness indicators were used: Import Coverage Ratio, Intraindustry Trade Index and Concentration Index of Exports. Data were collected from the United Nations International Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade). Based on the indicators analyzed, it is suggested that the Uruguayan international trade pattern is based on comparative advantages identified in the sectors that produce basic or manufactured agricultural products, especially meat, dairy products and poorly processed wood. Likewise, Uruguayan intra-industrial trade is restricted to sectors of low technological intensity. Thus, the Uruguayan export basket can be characterized as undiversified and unsophisticated, corresponding to the role of producer and exporter of food and raw materials in the international division of labor.
