FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS IN THE VALE DO SINOS REGION
Main Article Content
Abstract
The demands of learning and performance, changes in routine, family distance and deprivation of sleep and leisure are all factors that contribute to the decline in well-being among undergraduate medical students. The aim of this study was to identify factors that contribute to the psychological distress of medical students. The participants were 167 students from a private university in the Vale do Sinos region who answered an online questionnaire that assessed scores of psychological distress, stress, Burnout symptoms and socioeconomic and demographic variables. The participants were aged between 18 and 46 and variables such as gender, course cycle and financial independence were significantly associated (p < 0.05) with the frequency of psychological distress. In terms of Burnout symptoms, the results indicated that 92.2% of the students had experienced psychological distress in the last 30 days. In terms of health variables, 52% of the students had sought mental health care in the last 12 months and of these 83.9% scored >7 on the SRQ-20 (p 0.003). It was possible to see that even though this is a frequently studied topic, students remain in psychological distress due to the organization and demands for high performance throughout the course.
