Abstract

Maternal mortality associated with diabetes mellitus and COVID-19 represents a significant public health problem in Brazil, as gestational diabetes represents a significant risk factor for morbidity and mortality during this period. Furthermore, COVID-19 is a respiratory disease that presents an increase in morbidity and mortality when considering risk factors. This article aims to describe the profile of maternal mortality associated with COVID-19 from 2020 to 2023 in Brazil. This is an epidemiological, analytical, exploratory, and retrospective study with a quantitative approach. The population consisted of deaths among pregnant women diagnosed with diabetes and diagnosed with COVID-19 from 2021 to 2023 in Brazil. Data collection was performed using the influenza epidemiological surveillance information system (SIVEP-GRIPE) from 2021 to 2023, a secondary data source. The results indicated a survival probability of 78.5 in the first trimester, 75.3 in the second trimester, and 74.3 in the third trimester. In other words, the higher the gestational age, the lower the survival rate. It can be concluded that COVID-19 reduces the survival rate in pregnant women living with diabetes mellitus. On the other hand, measures such as adherence to the vaccination schedule and preventive behaviors tend to reduce morbidity and mortality in pregnant women living with diabetes who contract COVID-19.
