THE TEACHING OF GEOGRAPHY AND THE TRAINING OF TEACHERS IN COLOMBIA: AN INITIAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

Geography Teaching is essential during the training of students in primary education due to the speed of transformations in the social, political and technological environment. It is from the understanding of this discipline that the student will be able to know their territory, their place, their relationship with society and nature, a global system and thus obtain a broad understanding to act in the future as individuals capable of participating as responsible, committed, and reflective citizens on territorial and global issues. The aim of the research is to analyze and reflect how geography teaching and teacher training occurs that provide geographic knowledge in Colombia. The research addresses issues such as the history of the emergence of Geography Teaching in Colombia, where we find this discipline together with the Social Sciences in Colombia and how is the training of teaching professionals in Social Sciences. The methodology is based on qualitative educational research, highlighting the reading of Latin American authors related to Geography Teaching, official documents, as well as assisted lives during the pandemic period, where the contention of teaching was exposed, not only in Colombia, but as in other countries in Latin America and even in other continents. The geography addressed involves numerous discussions and practices, however it is essential to understand the reality of Latin American schools are very diverse.
