Abstract

Viral hepatitis represents an important public health problem due to its disabling potential and the possibility of progression to liver cancer and even death. Among the various types of viral hepatitis, the most common are Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of hospitalizations for viral hepatitis in a reference hospital in the state of Paraíba during the year 2023. The research was carried out using data from the Alcides Carneiro University Hospital, part of the Empresa Brasileira de Serviços Hospitalares network. Data were collected from the Notifiable Diseases Information System. After calculating the prevalence, it was observed that Hepatitis B and C represent 24% of hospitalizations in the group of compulsory notification diseases. The results indicate the need to intensify primary and secondary prevention actions. Despite the implementation of basic care, viral hepatitis type B being vaccine-preventable and prevention and treatment campaigns promoted by the Ministry of Health, these diseases continue to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the epidemiological profile. This suggests the need for greater integration of the health care network and intensification of disease prevention and control strategies.
