Abstract

Emergent systems have become fundamental to health practice. However, they receive little attention in meaningful debates, especially those dealing with technological innovations in the field of digital health. For this reason, this article aims to understand the role of emergent systems in this context, using Institutional Theory as a theoretical lens and based on the coexistence of institutional logics for the analysis of the phenomenon. This qualitative investigation is based on an interpretative case study conducted at the Intensive Care Center of the Brazilian National Cancer Institute (INCA), using participant observation and semi-structured interviews for data collection. Data analysis followed the principles of Grounded Theory in thermos of its initial coding and revealed how information systems, including emerging ones, are employed by doctors and nursing professionals in health practices, contributing to filling theoretical gaps and suggesting the need for more theorization in research of this type. It is concluded that this study offers a new perspective on the use of information technologies in health, highlighting the role of technological artifacts within a dynamic context and uncertainty-laden context.
