Abstract

The study aims to highlight the advancements and challenges in the field of head and neck surgeries, as well as related aspects, particularly within the context of public health. Employing a qualitative approach through an Integrative Literature Review (ILR), the study follows a sequential method involving defining and selecting the theme, establishing inclusion and exclusion criteria, delimiting information, critical evaluation, analysis and interpretation of results, and presenting a synthesized review of the knowledge. The research spanned from October 2023 to January 2024, utilizing sources such as the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and databases like CAPES and PubMed via MEDLINE. Specific filters were applied, resulting in the selection of 302 articles, with 27 critically analyzed and 13 included for detailed analysis. The study employed the PRISMA protocol for study selection and Bardin's content analysis methodology for interpretation. The results highlighted the importance of technological innovations, such as transoral robotic surgery (TORS), and the need to overcome barriers for its wider adoption. The study addressed the implications of using p16 status in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and the relevance of preserving nerve function in head and neck surgeries. Additionally, the study underscored the need for future research focused on optimizing treatments and reconstruction strategies. In conclusion, the study provides valuable insights for future research and innovations in head and neck surgeries, evidencing significant advancements and persistent challenges, and highlighting the importance of holistic and adaptive approaches in surgical practice.
