THE MYTH OF RACIAL DEMOCRACY AND ITS REFLECTIONS IN PERCEPTION SOCIAL ABOUT PUBLIC POLICIES OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTIONS IN BRAZIL

Abstract
This scientific essay aims to understand how the myth of racial democracy has made it difficult for Brazilian society to understand the relevance of affirmative action policies as paths to repair and promote better living conditions for the Brazilian black population. In methodological terms, the essay has an exploratory and descriptive nature, being structured based on bibliographic and documentary sources. In summary, the myth of racial democracy represents the idea – eminently fallacious, it is worth highlighting – that in Brazil there would be no prejudices and asymmetries permeated by the racial belonging of individuals. The concrete reality, however, reveals that black people are systematically excluded from spaces of power and agency in the Brazilian social context, so that the dissemination of public affirmative action policies aimed at granting rights to this group would be essential. However, such public policies face enormous resistance in the Brazilian public debate, mainly because, as discussed throughout this essay: (i) they would be illegal mechanisms, which would create conflicts between different racial groups; (ii) these are initiatives aimed at black people, who would be difficult to identify in a mixed-race society and; (iii) they would represent actions to combat racism, which is a system of oppression that has no echo in Brazilian territory. Such arguments, despite bordering on the absurd and being contradicted by facts, still find fertile ground in Brazil, especially due to the strength that the myth of racial democracy still has in the country. Therefore, it is concluded that the idea of racial democracy, despite being a myth, is still something very present in contemporary Brazilian society and generates consequences that result in the perpetuation of the invisibility situation still relegated to black populations in Brazil.
