REVISITING THE GEOGRAPHY OF CRIME IN BOA VISTA (RR)
Main Article Content
Abstract
The geography of crime is an epistemological field of increasing empirical and scientific relevance due to its contributions to the analysis of a relational tripod involving crimes, space and society. Based on this thematic agenda, the book “Geography of Crime: A Case Study in Boa Vista (RR)” explores the geography of crime, analyzing the patterns, causes, and consequences of criminal activities in different geographical contexts. It highlights the influence of environmental, social, and economic variables on crime occurrence. The objective is to investigate organized crime and its territoriality in Boa Vista, focusing on the Vila Jardim housing complex in the Cidade Satélite neighborhood, providing insights for public policies and security strategies. The research employs a bibliographic review, statistical data from the Civil Police, and surveys conducted with residents, combining documentary analysis and geographic mapping using GIS. The findings reveal that crime in Boa Vista is driven by gentrification and population displacement, creating new hotspots like Vila Jardim. The territorial dominance of criminal organizations is facilitated by the absence of state presence, while social vulnerability increases the perception of insecurity, corroborated by police reports. The book concludes that the geography of crime is crucial for addressing urban criminality. It underscores the importance of public policies that consider socio-spatial dynamics and highlights the urgency of preventive interventions in vulnerable territories, integrating urban planning and public safety.
