Abstract

The co-responsibility of men during the puerperium makes it possible to minimize fears, anxieties and doubts in the family nucleus. Therefore, by establishing that only the mother deserves care and comfort, it is not possible to understand the process of paternity, in which the father becomes an active and participatory member in the care given to the child. This study aims to describe the experience of adolescents and young adults during the puerperium of their partners. The method is based on the qualitative approach developed in 16 family health units in a city in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte. Fifteen adolescent and young adult men were interviewed. The data were obtained through the in-depth interview technique. The data were submitted to Content Analysis together with the Iramuteq software, and a dendrogram, corresponding factor analysis, similarity analysis and word cloud were performed. The results demonstrate that adolescent and young adult men relate to the demands that emerge in the puerperium, the transformations in the family context, the feelings and attention during this period. Furthermore, they develop care and present behavioral changes such as responsibility, care for the newborn and partner. It is concluded that the experience of the adolescent and young adult man in the puerperium is related to the care offered to the partner and the newborn, with the domestic environment and with feelings that emerge in the puerperal period.
