Abstract

The expansion of soybean in the Legal Amazon is an important phenomenon to be studied. The importance lies in the fact that the occupation occurs to the detriment of the forest area. The main objective of this study is to verify the patterns of spatial distribution of soybeans in the Legal Amazon between the years 2000 and 2022. In addition, the manifestation of the phenomenon of spatial convergence was evaluated, that is, whether there is a relative increase in soybeans in the region under study. The variable studied was the municipal planted area with soybeans in all municipalities in the Legal Amazon, totaling 772 observations per year. Statistical methods were used that consider the geographic effects on the variable and regression models with parameters that capture different spatial effects. The results show that, in fact, there is the phenomenon of spatial autocorrelation, and that such correlation has been increasing over time. The econometric models showed the existence of spatial convergence of soybeans in the Legal Amazon, indicating that municipalities with little planted area of soybeans are growing at higher rates than municipalities with large planted areas. This fact occurs because there is a facilitation of production, through technology transfer, infrastructure and production flow.
