Abstract

This work gathers reflections on the experiences of Depo Provera contraceptive users based on posts in the Facebook group “Anticoncepcionais Injetáveis: Dúvidas e Efeitos Colaterais”. A descriptive study was conducted in a digital context from November 2020 to October 2021, with a qualitative focus. The group is primarily composed of young Brazilian women who are current or former users of the quarterly injectable contraceptive. They use this space to share their experiences related to side effects and seek support in dealing with them. The context analysis technique was employed, allowing for an exploration of the meanings attributed by the users. Two predominant units of meaning were identified: disruptions in menstrual cycles and adverse effects experienced after discontinuing the method. Users of the quarterly injectable were found to resort to various additional drugs and natural remedies to cope with recurrent side effects such as menstrual irregularities. Significant impacts were observed in the onset or prolonged maintenance of side effects following discontinuation of the method, such as irregularities in menstrual cycles and delays in the return of reproductive capacity. Social media serves as an important source of women´s health information; intimate experiences are shared there, fostering solidarity and supportive environment among participants with similar usage experiences.
